FAQ's

OUR COFFEE

Where is your coffee from?

The origins of each of our gourmet coffee bags are carefully selected to making the perfect brew. All of our Roasts are organic, 100% Arabica and Fairtrade. Our Dark Roast is from Sumatra, Indonesia; our Medium Roast is from Guatemala; our Light Roast is from Sidamo, Ethiopia; and our Decaf Roast is from San Ignacio, Peru. Read more here.

How strong is your coffee?

We use a 0 to 5 rating for each of our roasts to indicate the strength. 0 is the lowest strength, and 5 is the highest. Our Sumatran Dark Roast is 4/5, our Guatemalan Medium Roast is 3/5, our Ethiopian Light Roast is 2/5, and our Decaf Roast 2/5.

How caffeinated is your coffee?

Caffeine quantity is variable based on crop seasonality, roasting variances, brewing conditions and several other factors. For this reason, we do not specifically test for it but we know the average cup of coffee contains approximately 95mg of caffeine.

What does ‘100% Arabica’ mean?

There are several species of plant which coffee beans are harvested from. Arabica is one of these plants (Robusta is another common variety). ‘100% Arabica’ means that all our beans come from the same species of coffee plant. This ensures that every cup of New Kings Coffee has the same soft, sweet quality with acidic overtones. While this is true, there are still delicious variances between each of our carefully selected Roasts. For example, our Dark Roast has notes of peach syrup and spices, while our Light Roast has notes of blackcurrant and red cherry. Try them all to decide your favourite!

What does single origin mean?

Single origin means that all the beans in each cup come from the same farm. This means that not only do they come from the same country (Guatemala, Peru, Ethiopia or Indonesia) but they have the same single farm origin. Without this promise, you cannot ensure the same great flavour that each cup of New Kings Coffee provides.

What is Swiss Water Process?

We make our Decaf Roast using Water Processing developed in Switzerland and Peruvian beans from San Ignacio. This decaffeination process uses pure water, temperature and time to create a coffee that is 99.9% caffeine free (no decaf roast is 100% caffeine free). This a gentle and chemical-free process that makes no compromise on flavour. We’ve run taste tests that have confirmed that our customers cannot tell the difference between fully caffeinated coffee and our decaf roast.

COFFEE BAG

What is a coffee bag?

Just a like a tea bag – but with delicious, ground coffee inside instead of tea leaves!

What are coffee bags made from?

Our coffee bags are made from BioWeb. This is a 100% biodegradable material made from corn starch. It makes no compromise in terms of flavour and can be disposed of in your food waste bin. Read more here.

Do your coffee bags contain plastic?

No, our coffee bags are made entirely from BioWeb (see previous FAQ) and contain no plastic.

How big are your coffee bags?

Approximately 77mm x 87mm.

Can I add cream or milk?

Treat our coffee just like any other coffee (but better). You can add cream, milk or plant milk to your taste.

How do you brew coffee with a coffee bag?

Put your coffee bag into a mug and add boiling water. Let it brew for 3-5 minutes (depending on how strong you like your coffee). Stir, squeeze and remove the bag. Easy!

FAIRTRADE COFFEE

What is Fairtrade coffee?

Fairtrade is a regulation board that ensures the best possible working standards and conditions for farmers in developing countries. This means farmers can make their own decisions, control their futures and while providing for their families. We support Fairtrade as we believe it is a step in the right direction towards making a difference in the lives of coffee farmers. Sustainability is at the heart of our business and this is a big part of ensuring sustainable working practices for all.

Where is Fairtrade coffee grown?

Fairtrade coffee is grown all around the world, primarily in developing nations. At New Kings Coffee we have a selection of coffee varieties including single origin beans from Peru, Indonesia, Ethiopia and Guatemala.

Is Fairtrade coffee really fair?

Fairtrade ensures better quality of life for coffee farmers. Fairtrade coffee is generally more expensive than average supermarket coffee as they ensure industry standard wages. The minimum price for a pound of Fairtrade coffee is £1.06 (£1.29 if it is also organic). Ensuring better wages for farmers is an investment in the future and a starting place for improving global farming practices and workers’ rights.

What is the Fairtrade premium?

Fairtrade Premium is an additional sum of money on top of selling price that goes back to farmers and workers for them to invest in projects of their choosing. The Fairtrade Premium helps certain goals be achieved, such as improved business and education in local communities.

What do farmers use the Fairtrade Premium for?

Farmers who join the Fairtrade program join a co-operative with other local farmers. Each co-operative has a democratically elected representative responsible for deciding the best use of the Fairtrade Premium. In the past it has been used for issues relating to community education and environmental sustainability.

ORGANIC COFFEE

What does ‘Organic Coffee’ mean?

Organic coffee is free from additives, preservatives, pesticides and herbicides. The purity and lack of chemical products makes organic coffee better for your health than common commercial coffee.

Does organic coffee taste better?

Organic coffee typically does taste better as the beans are gown at higher altitudes which result in the development of a richer flavour. This richer flavour indicates real, pure ground coffee. At New Kings Coffee we are proud that all of our Roasts boast this richness.

SUSTAINABLE COFFEE

Are New Kings Coffee coffee bags sustainable?

At New Kings Coffee every single package and coffee bag is made out of sustainable and recyclable materials. Our commitment to developing practices that combat climate change and support human resources is at the heart of our business.

We teamed up with TerraCycle (https://www.terracycle.com/en-GB/) to ensure that even our foil sachets can be recycled. We are currently looking at changing to PE4 sachets that can be recycled at any supermarket with carrier bag recycling facilities. Currently, please send your empty foil sachets to New Kings Coffee (New Kings Court, Bristol, BS7 8JS). We will make sure they are sent to TerraCycle to be properly disposed of using their Zero Waste Box Policy.

On top of this, our coffee bags themselves are made of BioWeb and can be disposed of in your food waste bin.
